MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

On behalf of the Miri Obesity Prevention Organization (MOPO), I extend my warmest greetings to all visitors to our website.

Obesity has become one of the most pressing health challenges in Malaysia. Recent reports show that Malaysia has one of the highest prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in Southeast Asia, with almost one in two adults classified as overweight or obese. This trend is alarming, as obesity is strongly linked to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers. Without urgent action, the impact on individuals, families, and our healthcare system will continue to grow.

MOPO was formed with clear objectives:

  • To raise awareness of the dangers of obesity and its related health risks.
  • To promote healthy lifestyle practices through education, community activities, and outreach programs.
  • To collaborate with schools, healthcare providers, NGOs, and government agencies in reducing obesity prevalence in Miri and beyond.
  • To empower individuals and families with knowledge and practical solutions to achieve long-term health and well-being.

As Chairman, I believe that addressing obesity is not the responsibility of one organization alone — it requires the collective effort of the whole community. Together, we can create a culture that values balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and preventive healthcare.

I encourage every member of the public to join us in this important mission. By working together, we can build a healthier Miri, a healthier Sarawak, and ultimately, a healthier Malaysia.

Let us unite to fight obesity and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases for the benefit of our future generations.

Mr. Jong Koi Chong

Chairman
